Program Overview:
The Space Systems Program Refresh aims to modernize and optimize educational offerings in aerospace and satellite systems. The course “Cost-Effective Space Mission Operations” focuses on operational strategies, trade-offs, and technologies that enable affordable and sustainable space missions. The SME will design the course from the ground up—including syllabus, instructional content, and assessments—with emphasis on both technical rigor and practical application.
Key Responsibilities
As the Subject Matter Expert, you will:
- Curriculum Development
- Develop the full syllabus for the course Cost-Effective Space Mission Operations.
- Align learning objectives with graduate-level expectations and industry standards (e.g., NASA, ESA, ISRO).
- Content Creation
- Develop high-quality, academically rigorous course materials such as: scripts for video lectures, reading materials, case studies, discussion prompts, multimedia elements (in coordination with the instructional design team)
- Ensure technical depth and relevance for working professionals and recent graduates.
- Design modular content that can be reused across programs and easily tagged for search and retrieval.
- Document skills and competencies for each module and apply SEO-style tags for future indexing in a central content database.
- Use institutional blueprint templates to align learning outcomes, competencies, and content duration per module.
- Assessment Design
- Create formative and summative assessments, including: Assignments, quizzes, Capstone projects
- Develop grading rubrics and model answers.
- Stakeholder Collaboration
- Coordinate with instructional designers, project managers, and academic committees to ensure content quality and pedagogical alignment.
- Participate in feedback loops and course revision processes.
Qualifications:
Education
- Master’s or Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Space Operations, or a closely related field.
Professional Experience
- 7+ years in the aerospace or satellite industry with hands-on experience in mission operations, spacecraft design, or space systems engineering.
- Demonstrated expertise in:
- Space mission planning and operational design
- Cost reduction strategies for government or commercial missions
- Satellite constellation management, telemetry, and command/control systems
Desirable Skills
- Prior involvement in CubeSat, SmallSat, or commercial space missions.
- Familiarity with NASA’s AOA (Analysis of Alternatives) process or similar.
- Experience teaching or developing technical content in an academic or corporate setting.
Required Skills
- Proficiency with space mission simulation tools (e.g., STK, GMAT, FreeFlyer) or cost modeling frameworks
- Understanding of operations software, automation, and ground segment optimization
- Strong technical writing and curriculum design capabilities
- Ability to translate complex engineering concepts into accessible learning experiences
